This calculator uses six: hourglass, pear, inverted triangle, rectangle, apple and spoon. It also tells you if you are a top or bottom hourglass, which are common variations.
Stand straight in light clothing. Measure your bust around the fullest part, your waist at the narrowest point (usually just above the belly button), your high hip about 7 to 9 inches (18 to 23 cm) below your waist, and your hips around the widest part of your bottom. Keep the tape level and snug, not tight.
Studies of women's measurements have found rectangle to be among the most common shapes, with pear and hourglass variations also very common. Every shape is normal.
Both have hips wider than the bust. A spoon shape has a more defined waist and a high, rounded hip curve that sits close to the waist, like a shelf. A pear's hips widen more gradually.
Waist-to-hip ratio is your waist divided by your hips. Health organizations often use about 0.85 or lower for women and 0.90 or lower for men as a general guide. It is only one simple indicator, so speak to a doctor about your health.
Your bone structure stays the same, but weight changes, muscle, pregnancy and age can change your measurements and your shape. It is worth measuring again from time to time.
The six shapes are mainly used in women's fashion, but the measurements and waist-to-hip ratio work for anyone. Men often fall into rectangle, inverted triangle or apple.
