About The Detector

How Does The Face Shape Detector Work?

Face Shape Detector Free uses an AI face model that runs right inside your browser. It places 478 points on your face, measures your forehead, cheekbones, jawline and face length, then compares those proportions with the seven main face shapes. The closest match becomes your result, along with a short breakdown of your measurements.

Try it on the Face Shape Detector.

Which Face Shapes Can It Identify?

The detector recognizes the seven face shapes stylists use most: oval, round, square, heart, diamond, oblong and triangle. Each result links to a full guide with hairstyles, glasses and grooming tips for that shape.

Browse all seven in the Face Shapes Guide.

How Accurate Is The Result?

With a clear, front-facing photo the detector is very reliable for most people. Many faces sit between two shapes, though, so if your proportions are close to a boundary you may see a slightly different result from photo to photo. When that happens, read the guides for both shapes, because advice for neighboring shapes overlaps a lot.

What Makes A Good Photo For Face Shape Detection?

Look straight at the camera with a neutral expression and hold the phone at eye level, about an arm's length away. Pull your hair back from your forehead and jawline, take off glasses and use soft, even light from the front. Avoid filters, strong shadows and wide-angle close-ups, because they change your proportions.

Why Did I Get A Different Result Than I Expected?

Head angle, camera distance, lighting and hair covering your forehead or jaw can all shift the measurements. It is also common to see yourself as one shape when your proportions are actually closer to another. Try two or three good photos, or measure your face by hand with the Face Shape Calculator to double-check.

Is My Photo Stored Or Shared?

No. All the analysis happens on your own device, inside your browser. Your photo is never uploaded to our servers, never stored and never shared. Once you close the page, it is gone.

Do I Need An Account To Use It?

No account, email or app is needed. Open faceshapedetectorfree.com, add a photo and get your result in seconds, on a phone, tablet or computer.

Is The Tool Really Free? Are There Hidden Costs?

Yes, it is completely free. There are no paid tiers, no sign-up and no limit on how many photos you can try. The same goes for every other tool on Face Shape Detector Free, including the calculator, the try-on tools and the style finders.

Styling By Face Shape

What Are The Best Hairstyles For An Oval Face?

Oval faces are balanced, so almost any cut works, from pixies and bobs to long layers and curtain bangs. The main thing to avoid is heavy volume on top, which can make the face look longer. Men can wear anything from a buzz cut to a textured quiff.

What Hairstyles And Glasses Suit A Round Face?

Round faces look best with styles that add height and length, such as long layers, side parts, lobs that fall below the chin and volume at the crown. For glasses, angular frames like rectangles and wayfarers add definition. Avoid chin-length rounded bobs and small round frames.

How Do I Style A Square Face?

Soften a strong jaw with movement and curves: soft waves, side-swept bangs, layers that start below the chin and curly textures. Round and oval glasses balance angular features well. Very blunt cuts that end at the jaw and boxy frames can make the face look heavier.

What Suits A Heart-Shaped Face?

Heart faces are wider at the forehead and narrow at the chin, so the goal is to add width lower down. Chin-length bobs, side-swept or curtain bangs and waves that start at the jaw work well. Bottom-heavy or rimless frames, as well as light oval shapes, balance the forehead.

What Are The Best Styles For A Diamond Face?

Diamond faces have wide cheekbones with a narrower forehead and chin. Add fullness at the forehead and jaw with side-swept bangs, chin-length bobs and textured layers. Oval and cat-eye glasses soften the cheekbones nicely.

See the full diamond face guide.

How Do I Style An Oblong Face?

Oblong faces are longer than they are wide, so choose styles that add width and shorten the face visually. Bangs, waves and volume at the sides work well, while very long straight hair and tall top volume make the face look longer. Oversized and wide frames also help.

See the full oblong face guide.

What Works For A Triangle Face?

Triangle faces have a jaw that is wider than the forehead. Add volume and width at the top with layered cuts, side parts and textured crowns, and keep length around the jaw soft. Browline and cat-eye glasses draw attention upward.

Understanding Face Shapes

What Is The Difference Between Oval And Oblong Faces?

Both are longer than they are wide, but an oblong face is noticeably longer, with the forehead, cheeks and jaw at similar widths, almost like a rectangle with soft corners. An oval face is shorter and tapers gently toward a rounded chin.

What Is The Difference Between Heart And Diamond Faces?

Both have a narrow, often pointed chin. The difference is at the top: a heart face is widest at the forehead, while a diamond face is widest at the cheekbones and has a narrower forehead.

Can I Have More Than One Face Shape?

Yes. Many people are a blend, such as oval-heart or round-square. The detector shows your closest match, and the advice for neighboring shapes usually suits you too. Pick the tips that address the feature you want to balance.

Does Face Shape Change With Age Or Weight?

Your bone structure stays the same in adulthood, but weight changes, aging skin and fullness in the cheeks can shift how your face reads. A face that looked round in your twenties might read more oval or square later, so it is worth checking again every few years.

Does The Detector Work For Men And Women?

Yes. Face shape is based on bone structure, so the detector works the same way for everyone. Each face shape guide includes haircuts, beard styles and glasses for men as well as hairstyles and makeup tips for women.

Men can also try the Beard Style Finder.
